Detox Centers – A Helping Hand To Detoxify
Detox centers are facilities where trained professionals help recovering addicts
through the detoxification from their drug or alcohol abuse. The word detox
is short for detoxification. Abstinence and detoxification are early steps in
any substance abuse rehabilitation.
Detox is the process of ridding the human body from any substance it has developed
a dependency for, whether it is alcohol, illegal street drugs or abuse of prescribed
pharmaceutical drugs. These addictions know no boundaries in regards to age,
sex, race or social class. Those in need of rehabilitation can range from the
elderly to teenagers and from the affluent, Hollywood celebrities for instance,
to middle or low-income demographics.
Detox centers are a necessity in the drug rehabilitation process since drug
detoxification must take place under the supervision and care of experienced
professionals. The brain gradually adapts to the presence of any substance the
body is continually fed. This brings forth the physical tolerance that develops
to drugs like heroin, amphetamines, painkillers, sedatives, cocaine, nicotine
or alcohol. Abruptly ending their use will starve the body and brain that are
looking to feel the 'normal state' that they had adjusted to in the presence
of the drug or alcohol use.
This can lead to withdrawal symptoms where it may take weeks or months to return
to normal depending on the substance and level of addiction. While undergoing
treatment at a detox center patients may become violently ill or have severe
mental breakdowns. For instance, side effects or withdrawal from heroin may
include nausea, dry throat, headaches, hallucinations, fevers, chills, shakes,
increased paranoia and a host of other un-pleasantries. Those addicted to alcohol will go through what are known as delirium tremens
(DT's) after three to five days without alcohol. The symptoms of DT's can include
moments of profound confusion, hallucinations, disorientation, hyperactivity
and sometimes extreme cardiovascular disturbances. The condition will cause
shifts to your breathing, your temperature control and circulation. Side effects
could include an erratic fast heartbeat or a dramatic increase in your blood
pressure and the potential for very serious dehydration. Heavy opiate users might have to be brought down with specific detoxification
medicines. In certain cases, going cold turkey can actually create major health
hazards that will require hospitalization.
It is crucial that the professionals available at detox centers monitor this
process for the patient's well-being. Detox centers are important in sparing
or alleviating much pain or physical/mental distress during detoxification treatment.
The patient must also be monitored to ensure they complete the detox process.
Quitting before detox is complete can lead to a much higher risk of relapse
back to substance abuse. Detox centers are readily available throughout the country and the entire world.
Their high visibility is due to their important role in helping people overcome
the physical and mental repercussions of abstaining from drugs or alcohol while
ridding their body from the toxins associated with their abuse. Their role is
so vital that many operate under state or government funding, non-profit entities
or charitable organizations.
